What a great documentary, one of the nicest on the subject I’ve seen so far. Thanks for posting!
What was the old saying: “If You’re tired of Marvel, You’re tired of life”?

A differences between Marvel and DC was the marvel super heroes had some flaw. Peter Parker(Spiderman) outcast nerd with financial problems, Don Blake(Thor) Lame. Robert Bruce Banner (Hulk) a temper. Matt Murdock (Dare Devil) Blind. Fantastic Four always squabbled. Submariner villian almost as often as a hero. Hawkeye, Black Widow, Quick Silver and Scarlet Witch started out as villians and became heroes. Later more extreme the Punisher(killed), and Elektra (an assasin).

sorry mate but batman has a very large flaw in that he has some serious issues seeing as his parents and freinds have been killed.

JACK KIRBY MADE MARVEL and the new fans of comics need to know it. Kirby was clearly not just drawing Stan’s ideas. THE FACTS: Kirby joins Marvel and shortly after, they have a thousand new and inventive characters. Kirby leaves Marvel and creates an entire universe of characters for D.C., many of which are still huge. Stan, at this time, QUITS WRITING. Jack comes back to Marvel and creates more characters that are still quite big. The facts are undeniable. Stan was GREAT but JACK WAS THE KING.

From what I’ve read, DC worked in the usual format: writer writes a story and then an artist would illustrates it. Marvel, on the other hand, many times had an artist illustrate parts of a story and then a writer would write a plot around it.

not exactly…the marvel way was to have the writer (or editor) provide a general outline…then the artist would draw the entire story, and the writer would fill in the dialogue…however, many times the artist just did the whole thing

That’s true, but he wasn’t really written as flawed for many years.

The narration on this thing is odd. I can’t identify the accent at all. I do know that’s not how you pronounce Marie Severin’s first name or John Buscema’s last name. Also, did y’all notice that when he said Marie’s name they showed her picture, but when they said Ditko they showed Big John B? Ha!

Did Stan just make that story up about coming up with the “Marvel” name? I remember seeing Golden Age “Timely” era comics that had insignia saying they were “A Marvel Comic”.

How did Jack know how much space to leave for dialogue “bubbles” that Stan would add later?

Steve Ditko was/is a very private man and doesn’t like having his face shown. He said his art spoke for itself. The artist behind the art is unimportant.

Usually a script is written before the art is done.

But Stan didn’t usually write scipts. Stan would give him a brief summary of the next issue, Jack would draw it, telling the story anyway he wanted, leaving space in every panel for dialogue. Then Stan would place the Dialogue based on Jack’s drawing. To answer ur question, if u were gunna draw a picture of a person just standing there, u would of course leave space because, noone would want to just see a person standing there without saying anything. Basically, u just know
